A proper oak garden office, built to last

An oak garden office is a world away from a flat-pack shed. We build each one as a solid oak framed structure with insulation to building-regulation standards, quality double glazing, power, lighting, heating and data, so it is warm in winter, cool in summer and ready to work in every day of the year. Stepping into a dedicated space surrounded by natural oak also draws a clear line between work and home — a simple shift that many clients tell us does wonders for focus and well-being.

Designed around how you work

Home office & studio

Whether you need a compact single-desk office or a larger space with a meeting area, we design the layout, glazing and orientation around your working day and your garden.

Gym, yoga & creative studio

A garden room specified for work makes an equally beautiful gym, yoga studio, art room or workshop — light-filled, private and inspiring.

Guest & multi-use space

Add a shower room or kitchenette and your office can double as occasional guest accommodation.

Insulated for year-round use

The walls, floor and roof are fully insulated, and we fit quality glazing and heating so the office is comfortable through every season. This is a permanent, valuable addition to your property, not a seasonal room.

Planning permission for a garden office

Many garden offices fall within Permitted Development — broadly, single-storey, under 2.5 metres high within 2 metres of a boundary, and not used as self-contained living accommodation. We assess the rules for your plot and can manage a planning application or lawful development certificate where required.

Areas we cover

We are based in West Sussex near Crawley and work across Sussex, Surrey and Kent, including Horsham, Haywards Heath, East Grinstead, Crawley, Reigate, Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells, Guildford and the surrounding villages.

Oak that weathers beautifully

Green oak needs no chemical treatment. Left natural it weathers gently to a silver-grey over the first few years, or it can be oiled to keep a warmer honey tone. Either way, an oak garden office is virtually maintenance-free and only grows in character with age, which is why oak has been used for building in the South East for many hundreds of years.

What you get with Sussex Oak Structures

From your first enquiry to the finished garden office, you work with one experienced, local team. We begin with a free consultation and scaled drawings of the whole structure, hand-cut the frame from sustainably sourced green oak in our workshop, and install it for you on site — this is a complete design-and-build service, not a flat-pack kit. We guide you through planning and building regulations where needed, and stand behind work that is built to last for generations.

Can I use an oak garden office all year round?

Yes — with full insulation, quality glazing and heating, our garden offices are comfortable year-round workspaces, not seasonal rooms.

Can it be connected to power and broadband?

Yes — we install power, lighting, heating and data connections, and can provide for plumbing where a WC or kitchenette is wanted.

Do I need planning permission for a garden office?

Many garden offices fall within Permitted Development, but it depends on size, height and siting. We assess this for your plot and handle any application required.

How is a garden office different from a garden room?

A garden office is a garden room specified for work — we build both and tailor the insulation, glazing and services accordingly.

Will a garden office add value to my home?

A well-built, insulated oak garden office is a permanent structure that adds usable space and appeal, and is valued far more highly than a timber shed.

How quickly can a garden office be built?

Once designed and approved, most garden offices are completed within a few weeks; we agree a clear programme with you.

Do I need foundations for a garden office?

Yes — a proper base or foundation is part of building it to last; we assess the ground and include the groundworks in our quote.
