  • Aesthetics: Natural wood blends beautifully with any property style
  • Flexibility: Easy to modify or extend compared to concrete garages

1 Bay Oak Garage Configuration Options

Your single bay timber framed garage can be configured to suit your exact requirements:

Open-Fronted Garage

Easy access with a traditional oak carport or cart lodge feel. Ideal for everyday vehicle storage where convenience matters most. Open-fronted designs are often the most cost-effective option and can look stunning as a standalone feature on a driveway.

Enclosed Garage

Fully secure with traditional oak garage doors — perfect for protecting vehicles, motorcycles, or valuable equipment. We offer a range of door styles including side-hung, up-and-over, and bespoke oak barn doors.

Garage with Log Store

An integrated firewood store under a catslide roof extension makes use of the side space without increasing the main footprint. This is one of our most popular configurations for rural properties with wood-burning stoves.

Garage with Workshop

A rear or side workshop area with separate access gives you a practical workspace alongside vehicle storage. We can include electrical supply, workbench areas, and additional windows for natural light.

Single Bay Oak Garage Dimensions

All our oak garages are built to bespoke dimensions. The sizes below are typical starting points — we’ll adjust every measurement to suit your vehicle, your site, and your intended use.

Dimension Typical Size
Width 3.0m – 4.0m (10ft – 13ft)
Depth 5.5m – 7.0m (18ft – 23ft)
Height (eaves) 2.4m – 3.0m (8ft – 10ft)
Door Width 2.4m – 3.0m standard

Roof finishes include clay tiles, natural slate, or cedar shingles. All garages are made from high-grade green oak and can be supplied as part of a full design and build service.

Planning Permission for a 1 Bay Oak Garage

In many cases, a single bay oak garage falls under permitted development rights and won’t require a full planning application. To qualify, the garage generally must:

  • Be single storey with a maximum eaves height of 2.5 metres
  • Not exceed 4 metres in overall height (dual-pitch roof) or 3 metres (any other roof)
  • Not be forward of the principal elevation of the house
  • Not cover more than 50% of the total curtilage

If your property is in a conservation area, AONB, or near a listed building, additional restrictions may apply and planning permission could be required regardless of size. Our team can advise on your specific situation and manage the entire planning application process if needed.

Building Regulations

Detached garages under 30 square metres that are at least one metre from any boundary are generally exempt from building regulations, provided they are substantially non-combustible or more than one metre from any boundary. We’ll confirm exactly what applies to your project during our initial site visit.

How We Build Your Single Bay Oak Garage

1. Initial Consultation

We visit your site, discuss your requirements, and assess the practicalities — access, ground conditions, and any planning considerations. There’s no charge for this initial visit.

2. Bespoke Design

Our design team creates detailed plans tailored to your site and intended use. We’ll work through dimensions, configuration, door styles, and roof finishes until the design is exactly right.

3. Planning & Approvals

We confirm whether your garage falls under permitted development or requires a planning application. If an application is needed, we prepare and submit everything on your behalf.

4. Oak Frame Manufacture

Your oak frame is hand-crafted in our workshop using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. Each joint is individually cut and test-assembled before delivery.

5. Site Preparation & Foundations

Groundworks and foundations are prepared while your frame is being manufactured, keeping the build timeline efficient.

6. Frame Raising & Completion

The oak frame is delivered and erected on site — typically completed in one to two days for a single bay garage. Roofing, cladding, doors, and finishing works follow promptly.

Typical timeline: 6–10 weeks from sign-off to completion, depending on specification and site conditions.

What's the difference between oak and concrete garages?

Oak framed garages offer several advantages over concrete alternatives. A wooden garage enhances your property’s character while concrete can look industrial. For durability, oak garages last 100+ years with proper care, while concrete often cracks within 20–30 years. Oak construction is also more flexible — easy to modify, extend, or convert to different uses. And unlike concrete production, oak is a renewable, sustainable building material with a lower carbon footprint. Learn more about the advantages: Why Choose Oak.

Can I convert my single bay oak garage to a workshop?

Absolutely. Oak garages are highly versatile and easily accommodate workshop conversions. Many customers incorporate workshop space into their initial design, or convert later as needs change. Popular additions include workbenches and tool storage, electrical supply for power tools and lighting, a rear workshop area behind the parking space, and additional windows for natural light. The beauty of oak frame construction is its flexibility — you can modify the internal layout without compromising structural integrity.

How long does a single bay oak garage last?

A well-built oak framed garage can last 100+ years with proper maintenance. Green oak is incredibly durable — it actually strengthens over time as it seasons and joints tighten naturally. Many original oak framed buildings in Sussex date back centuries and remain structurally sound. Lifespan depends on quality of construction, regular maintenance, proper roof and drainage design, and quality foundations.

How much does a single bay oak garage cost?

Single bay oak garage prices vary depending on size, features, and specification. Cost is affected by whether you choose an open-fronted or enclosed design, additional features like log stores or workshop areas, roof materials, and the style of oak garage doors. Each garage is built to individual requirements, so no project is ever the same. Get in touch for a free, no-obligation quotation.

Do I need planning permission for a 1 bay oak garage?

In many cases, single bay garages fall under permitted development rights and don’t require planning permission — particularly if they’re single storey and meet height and size limits. However, if you’re in a conservation area, AONB, or near listed buildings, different rules apply. Our team can advise on your specific situation and assist with planning applications if required. We’ll confirm what applies during our initial site visit.

Can I customise the layout of my 1 bay garage?

Yes. Every oak garage we build is individually designed using our bespoke design service. Your garage can include internal walls, an integrated log store, side doors, roof storage, catslide extensions, and more. You choose between open-fronted or enclosed configurations, select your door style, and add features like workshop benches or additional storage. See our portfolio for examples of customised builds.

How long does it take to build a 1 bay oak garage?

From sign-off to completion, we typically deliver within 6–10 weeks. This includes frame manufacture in our workshop and on-site construction. The oak frame itself is raised in one to two days, with roofing, cladding, and finishing works following promptly. More complex designs with additional features may take longer. We’ll provide a detailed programme with your quotation.

Do I need foundations for a single bay oak garage?

Yes, all oak garages require proper foundations to ensure structural stability and longevity. For a single bay oak garage, we typically recommend concrete strip foundations or a concrete slab base, depending on site conditions. Foundation depth usually ranges from 450mm–750mm below ground level. Our team assesses your site and provides specific foundation requirements as part of your oak garage design process.

Do you sell oak garage kits for self-build?

We only offer full build packages — we do not sell garages as kits. This ensures every oak framed garage we deliver meets our quality standards and is properly constructed to last generations. Our service covers everything from design through to completion, giving you a single point of contact throughout.
