Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you source your oak from?
Our longstanding relations with our sawmill enable us to supply our customers with high-quality timber from the oldest sustainably managed forests in the world.
We are PEFC certified!
How much does an Oak frame building cost?
There is no one way to determine how much an oak frame costs before at the very minimum, a schematic design has been created. We base our quotes on the quantity of oak in the schematic designs. This quantity can vary between projects depending on the type, style, complexity, and size of the design.
If you have a design in mind and would like an idea on cost, please do get in touch.
How much of the project will Sussex Oak Structures undertake?
Sussex Oak Structures can offer to undertake all aspects of the construction of your building, or provide a supply only service of the frame. We are willing to supply and erect only if required.
How long will my project take?
This completely depends on the design, site conditions, and how quickly the oak can be sourced, machined, and delivered to site. Often, the design process can take up much of the time, depending on the amount of changes required.
Once the client has provided us with approval to source and machine the oak we can then advise on a time-scale. We work hard at Sussex Oak Structures to work to your time frame and deliver to site as soon as is practical.
If I appoint Sussex Oak Structures can I erect my own frame?
Yes. However we advise the frame is erected by competent and experienced individuals. All our frames are accompanied to site with a full set of working drawings, and detailed drawings with each element numbered to make erection on site a fast process.
Can you submit a planning application on my behalf?
Yes, we can submit a planning application and all the drawings required if you wish. We will liaise with the relevant council on your behalf.
What makes oak such a great material to construct with?
Oak has timeless qualities and is a strong and durable material to work with. Oak frames actually become stronger over time as the oak shrinks, pulling each joint together as it goes. Oak can fit seamlessly within most environments and can be used alongside many traditional building materials.
Are you able to supply me with a standard frame as I’m not sure what I want?
Yes we can, please contact us for more information. These frames can also be altered to suit your requirements. It is entirely up to you.
I like elements from a few of your projects, can I combine them?
Yes, the beauty of oak frame design is the flexibility offered in the design and the elements that make up a proposal. Most elements you see on our website can be combined to create the perfect bespoke building for you. The majority of work we undertake is bespoke.
I know what I would like, however I would like to see how it looks before it’s built. Is this possible?
Yes. All the drawings we provide are produced in the latest Computer Aided Design software that allows us to produce both 2D and 3D drawings/models. Our 3D models give you a glimpse of exactly how your building will look, inside and out.
Do you only work with oak?
No, we have experience in using a range of timbers, both from the UK and Europe. Often to save on costs clients use softwood timbers for cladding, internal walls, floor joists, and roof rafters.
We also have experience in glulam beams and buildings, in addition to being an official delivery partner of the Kingspan TEK Structurally Insulated Panel System (SIPS).
What Guarantee do you provide?
We include a 10yr insurance backed structural guarantee as well as a 12month settling period.
